Providing Premier Transportation for Annual College Football Event

Vectour has been a partner with the City of Birmingham for bus shuttle and staffing management services for the Magic City Classic (MCC), the largest football game in the country for a Historical Black College and University (HBCU). The MCC is one of the largest annual college football games between Alabama State and Alabama A&M, attracting more than 100,000 fans each year.

Vectour has held this contract since 2008, providing reliable shuttle services to move an estimated 13,000 gameday attendees to and from Legion Field and various park-and-ride locations. Our collaboration with the City of Birmingham, the Birmingham Police Department, and event organizers ensures seamless transportation operations for this high-profile event.

As part of Vectour’s community engagement efforts, since 2016, we have partnered with local HBCUs, Miles College and Lawson College, to provide job opportunities for their students during the MCC. Each year, thirty students join Vectour’s on-ground support staff, gaining valuable experience and contributing to the event’s success.

Objectives

The primary goal for the Magic City Classic is to provide efficient, safe, and reliable transportation services for the large number of attendees, ensuring a seamless experience for all participants and supporting the event’s logistics.

 

Challenges

  • High Volume of Attendees: Managing transportation for an estimated 13,000 gameday attendees requires precise planning and coordination.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including city officials, law enforcement, and event organizers, to ensure smooth operations.

 

Solutions

  • Comprehensive Planning:

    • Developed detailed transportation plans in collaboration with the City of Birmingham, Birmingham Police Department, and event organizers.

    • Implemented efficient shuttle routes and schedules to accommodate the high volume of attendees.

  • Fleet Management:

    • Deployed a fleet of 90 motor coaches to transport attendees to and from Legion Field and park-and-ride locations.

    • Ensured all vehicles were well-maintained and ready to provide reliable service throughout the event.

  • Staffing and Coordination:

    • Managed an operational staff of over 40 members to oversee transportation operations and provide on-site support.

    • Worked with local HBCUs to recruit and train thirty students annually as part of the on-ground support staff.

  • Community Engagement:

    • Partnered with Miles College and Lawson College to provide job opportunities for students, enhancing their experience and involvement in the event.

    • Promoted community involvement and support through active engagement and collaboration with local stakeholders.
